For those of you who entered our Ultimate Breakroom Makeover contest (and even those of you who didn’t) the burning question is ….. who won?
Well rather than just announcing the winner, we wanted to introduce you to the winner. So we are thrilled to announce our winner and introduce you to Amanda Radca of Kemper House, an Ohio-based residential care facility dedicated to caring for individuals with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Amanda was kind enough to answer a few questions for us.
How did you first find out about this contest?
My boss forwarded the contest email to me and a couple of my co-workers, suggesting we submit an entry. We all collaborated to write the submission and, even though we thought it was a longshot, we submitted our entry and crossed our fingers.
What particularly made you want to enter this contest?
The breakroom at Kemper House Strongsville really has not been updated since Kemper House opened in 1999. All it really has is a table with a few chairs, some lockers, a pop machine, and a computer for employees to work on. We were finding that a number of our employees would just go sit in their car on their break. So we knew we needed to give our employees a breakroom they deserved, and we hoped this could be a way to make it happen.
Did you have specific ideas about what you would do if you won?
Our employees have an extremely stressful job of caring for the elderly patients with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. It can be exhausting and stressful. So we wanted to create a place where our employees can go to relax and unwind, whether it’s for lunch or just a quick break during the day to recharge. We wanted the new break room to be a place where they could temporarily take their minds off of the work and recharge for the rest of their day.
What was the reaction in the office when you found out you’ve won?
We were elated! When I got the email stating we had won the contest, I yelled out “We won!” Everyone immediately knew what I was talking about and was SO excited/in shock. We then announced it on social media and to our staff, residents, and the entire Kemper House community who supported us by voting. There has been a lot of excitement and anticipation since then!
You already met with a couple of our designers recently. How did that go and how far along are you in the plans?
Yes, we recently met with Angie & Tammy and everything is going great so far! We are going to get an updated drawing of the breakroom back from them and we are very excited about their ideas.
