Racing off to ISM in Indianapolis

The team at Staples Business Advantage hit the road this week to attend the annual Institute of Supply Management conference in Indianapolis.  In case you couldn’t make it, here’s a quick recap.

For those not familiar with this event, ISM is the leading professional development event for procurement and purchasing professionals. It combines engaging keynotes, a long agenda of top-notch educational sessions and a very active exhibit hall to give procurement professionals everything they need.

The educational sessions this year were broken out in new tracks focusing on indirect and direct materials, dos and don’ts, risk, and other hot-button topics. With indirect broken out as an independent track this year, it was easy to see the amount of interest this standalone topic generated, clearly indicating more engagement and attention where indirect purchasing is concerned than we’ve seen in years past. On Wednesday, Carl Bergauer, director of contract furniture, teamed up with Chris Sawchuk of the Hackett Group to present on SRM best practices for the indirect spend and the session was literally standing room only.

If you couldn’t make the session, you can register for the webinar version of it here.

Earlier in the week, Staples CPO Michael Jacobs made a last-minute appearance on a CPO best practices panel to share his experience and learnings.

In the exhibit hall, Staples Business Advantage unveiled our new booth, focusing on the breadth of indirect materials and products we provide. Attendees were very intrigued by the 3D printer we had in the booth, which spurred a lot of discussion about applications within manufacturing, biotech, and beyond.

As always, the folks at ISM did a very good job of organizing an educational and relevant event. Always a must-attend for procurement professionals.
