From Bunny to Basket to Breakroom

April 7, 2015 Staples Advantage

The famous bunny with the baskets has come and gone, and you’re left with the question of what to do with all your leftover candy (or the half-priced candy that you couldn’t resist). Bring it to the office and foist it off on your coworkers, of course!

Okay, so maybe it’s not fair to reassign all those candy calories to your colleagues, but there’s something to be said for collaboration around the candy bowl… or water cooler, breakroom table, or other common area. With 41% of employees feeling burned out from long workdays, breaks are more important than ever. Here are a few ways you can avoid the burnout and help your coworkers do the same:

Share the love – but not at your desk! While we were kind of kidding about coaxing your coworkers into their own candy binge, many office workers do bring goodies in for their colleagues to share. Consider taking any shareable treats to your breakroom to encourage yourself and your coworkers to step away from their desks to partake. This will keep your desk clean, utilize the great space of your breakroom, and ensure everyone takes a break – 86% of workers say the small act of taking a break is enough to boost their productivity!

Take a hike! You need to take a break, and you want to shake off that winter hibernation that started to set in a few months ago. The good news is that taking your break (or your meeting) on the move is a great way to increase productivity, get your blood pumping, and stave off the injuries and discomfort that can come with long periods of sitting at your desk.

Make it a group effort! Collaboration is king in today’s office, and workplace design is evolving to help the modern worker collaborate with his or her colleagues as easily and productively as possible. If you’re getting ready to take a break, be a positive influence and encourage your coworkers to take short, productive breaks, as well. You may find yourself chatting about your latest project over a cup of coffee (and maybe a little chocolate) and uncovering new ideas and inspiration as you refresh and recharge!

Whether you managed to stay away from the half-priced candy aisle or came home with a few (dozen) chocolate bunnies to stash away or share, using the sweets of the season as a good reminder to take a break and boost your productivity is a smart move.
